"Play PSO later this year, for FREE!"

Many were stunned after last weeks announcement that Phantasy Star Online 2 would not only be free-to-play, but also appear on iOS and Android platforms. Sega issued a second announcement today, further clarifying the direction of its upcoming RPG.

"First off, we want to thank everyone for their continued support and interest in Phantasy Star Online 2! When we announced the game for iOS and Android, we did not mean to imply that those were the only additional platforms the game would be coming to. So today, we are officially announcing that this Winter, you will also be able to play Phantasy Star Online 2 on the Wii U, Playstation 2, Dreamcast, and TI-80 graphing calculator platforms!

We also want to restate that PC is our lead platform, but we also want players to be able to enjoy PSO 2, even if you're in a place with no electricity or internet. This of course, applies to locations within Japan only, as we have absolutely no plans in the future to release the game worldwide.

We also want to announce that all versions of game the will indeed play on the same servers! We had to make some small changes to the classic Phantasy Star Online gameplay in order to get it to work, but we feel the new system will be enjoyable for all players, new and old alike! Think of it like a rhythm game, enemies will appear on the screen, and you must tap them to attack, or swipe the screen to dodge. It's really quite fun and addicting, I hope you all enjoy this new system of combat!"

Further into the press release, Sega discussed the details of their surprising move to go free-to-play with the game.

"Many games launch with a pay-to-play subscription model, but then are forced to go free-to-play several months later. We decided to just skip this first step and launch free-to-play to begin with. We feel it makes a lot more sense this way, heck, it's probably what Phantasy Star Universe should have done to begin with.

Naturally as the game is free-to-play, there will be things in the game that you can buy with real money, but we want to stress that we will not go overboard on this, making the game known negatively by many players as pay-to-win. In Phantasy Star Online 2, you'll only be able to buy meseta, weapons, items, clothing, experience, higher level caps, extra classes, boss fights, individual missions and game time from the shop. Making a character, and running around town, is completely FREE for all players! Due to spamming concerns though, the ability to chat with other players must first be purchased.

Since there are hundreds of items and weapons in the game, we've also put together bundle packages, allowing you to unlock an entire category of items at once, and at a discount. Here is a sample of the current item rates we are looking at."

Base Game FREE!
Unlock all Character Classes $10
Unlock all Weapons $10
Unlock all Missions $10
Unlock all Boss Fights $10
Unlock all Clothing $10
Unlock Maximum Level Cap $10
Unlock one Month of Game Time $15

Exciting stuff! It's great to see a major publisher doing free-to-play right for once. I for one, can't wait for this game!
