Nintendo to GameStop: "Gotcha!"
"Your pre-order for Xenoblade Chronicles was all part of a little joke," says Fils-Aime.

Wii owners across the country had good reason to celebrate late last year when Nintendo finally relented on its months-long campaign of ignoring customers willing to throw them money in droves, finally announcing a US release for Monolith Soft's critically acclaimed JRPG Xenoblade Chronicles. It turns out, however, that the celebration may have been a bit premature, as it all seems to have been a big inside joke from the beginning.
In an open letter on Nintendo's website today, President and Chief Operating Officer at Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aime explained,
"...This is all a big misunderstanding by the public. It's a joke between two companies that got out of control, and was never intended to go public. It's actually pretty funny if you know the whole story.
It was all part of a really long April Fool's joke we were playing on GameStop. We offered them an exclusive deal on the product and asked that they keep quiet about it for a bit because there was still quite a bit of preparation we had to do on our end. The plan was for me to visit GameStop's executive offices on April 1st (today) and say "GOTCHA!" You can see how this was going to be pretty funny!
However, the product somehow ended up in their online database, and screenshots of that entry began to spread into the wild. After that, they then began taking pre-orders for the game. I must admit, I found it a little too hard to resist letting them have the egg on their face when this whole thing finally came to a close, so I kept quiet and let them go on about their business.
I do sincerely apologize to anyone who may be disappointed by this news. We really had no idea that this product was in such high demand. So even though North American Wii owners won't be experiencing Xenoblade Chronicles, there are still plenty of quality Wii experiences for Nintendo fans to enjoy such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Mario Party 9.
Thank you for your understanding and support!
GameStop is currently refunding all pre-orders placed for Xenoblade Chronicles and offering $.99 off any used game currently in stock at any participating GameStop location.
